Welcome to Larnaca
Larnaca Phinikoudes Beach

Larnaca, a small and charming town, is also the international gateway to Cyprus, being the location of the islands main international airport. A favoured destination in Larnaca is the Phinikoudes promenade, famed for its rows of palm trees, suitably named due to the fact that Phinikia, translated into English, means palm tree. The beach is suitable for all ages and a favourite with the tourists. Enjoy one of the many cafes, restaurants or Cypriot Tavernas or just spend the day relaxing in the Mediterranean sun on this beautiful beach. In the evening the Phinikoudes seafront offers the best night out in Larnaca, with the countless choices of pubs, bars, restaurants and clubs, which have events mostly during the Summer and bring world famous DJs to ensure a great night out. A bus service is also available to the other main cities from the promenade.

Treasures of the Past

 Saint Lazarus Church
Larnaca, although modern, is strongly connected to its history. After Saint Lazarus's resurrection he became the first bishop of Larnaca. Agios Lazarus was built where the saint's remains were found to honour him. The church of Saint Lazarus, which is situated close to the Phinikoudes beach, is open at all times but also has weekly tours where visitors discover its vast history.

Hala Sultan Teke in LarnacaThe first thing to notice as soon as leaving the airport is Larnaca's salt lake where you can see many migrant birds, mainly flamingos. In the same area is Hala Sultan Tekke, a complex made up of a mosque, a mausoleum and a minaret. It's believed to be one of the holiest sites in Islam and the most important location for Muslims in Cyprus.

Larnaca District Museum consists of 4 galleries where objects are exhibited in chronological order so the visitor may have a more complete picture of the historical development of the area. Larnaca itself was built upon the ancient city of Kition, one of the worlds oldest known cities. A must see for visitors interested in history and culture.

Panayia Angeloktistos Church

Southwest of Larnaca in the village of Kiti, is the church of Panayia Angeloktistos, with beautiful early Byzantine Mosaics. Angeloktisti means 'Built by the Angels'. This 11th Century Byzantine church was erected on the ruins of an early Christian basilica. The original apse survived together with one of the finest pieces of Byzantine art, a rare 6th century mosaic of the Virgin Mary and child between the two archangels.

The neolithic settlement of Choirokitia was founded by a community of primary farmers who made their livelihood tending livestock, hunting and trading with neighbouring communities, it is believed to date back to 5800 B.C.
The site is known as one of the most important prehistoric sites of the eastern Mediterranean. The Neolithic preceramic period is represented by the settlement of Choirokitia and about 20 other similar settlements spread throughout Cyprus.
